24 months vs 2T vs 92 cm: Toddler Clothing Sizes Explained

Is 2T the same as 24 months? Is size 90 a 2T? If you’ve shopped for children’s clothes and been confused over the difference in sizing, don’t worry – we all are. Clothing producers aren’t making it easy for new parents in the US when you discover that there is a difference between 24 months vs 2T.

Then, you add European sizing to the mix, not only if you travel to Europe but if you shop for some European brand sold in the US (or even big retailers like Amazon or SheIn) you realize that need a conversion chart for children’s clothing. Many popular brands, including Hanna Andersson, Molo, and Mini Rodini use European baby clothes sizes as they’re easier.

The American, British and Australian sizes are based on the age of the child, while in Europe the size is based on the child’s height in centimeters.

American Clothing Size Explained

When it comes to baby clothing sizes things already get confusing because you might begin to wonder… is the size “newborn” different than “0-3 months”?

American baby clothing sizes aren’t labeled by length, but by age which makes it more difficult as babies are born in different sizes and grow at different rates. My first son was never fitting into any newborn sizes and went straight into 0-3, while my second son actually needed size “preemie” but he wasn’t a preemie.

Up to 2 years of age clothes are labeled by months, but then an issue appears: 24 Months Vs 2T. Shouldn’t it mean the same?

Clothes that are labeled 24 months are made for those who are anywhere from 18 to 24 months (sometimes also labeled as 18-24 months). By comparison, 2T clothing is made for toddlers, generally anywhere from 2 to almost 3 years old. In theory…

Is 2T the Same as 24 Months?

There is more: clothing labeled 24 months or 18-24 months often come with additional buttons by the neck to easier remove the shirt, or offer snaps at the bottom to change a diaper.

Bottoms labeled 24 months are cut to leave more room to accommodate diapers, as clothing designers and makers assume that a child under the age of two years will be wearing one.

To make it even more confusing, brands do not all use the same clothing measurements. Each brand may have slightly different measurements and cut – some use the same measurements for both 2T and 24 months and some are different. For example, bamboo clothes will vary from cotton clothes, especially if they’re pajamas due to the amount of stretch.

To tell you the truth, the difference between 24 months vs 2T sizes is defined more by developmental differences than differences in actual age.

Toddler Clothing Size Chart US to European

As your baby grows into a toddler sizing concept changes. At 2 years old, the age range for the clothing shifts.

Up through 24 months, baby clothes sizes refer to the maximum age range for that size, but toddler clothes sizes refer to the minimum age.

In the US “T” stands for toddler. Sizes go up to 4 and then turn into “Y”, which stands for years. The American word “Toddler” and refers to small children aged 2-4 years, but many companies started using the letter T for size 6, so you’ll often see size 6T instead of 6Y (which doesn’t make sense because a 6-year-old is obviously not a toddler).
